Site of Tommy Sandi's Club Sahara at 1351 North E Street in San Bernardino (it says "cocktails" in the SB 1962-64 Yellow Pages). FZ played "week-ends with a four-piece lounge band called Joe Perrino and the Mellotones" here before acquiring Studio Z in Cucamonga. Burned down many years ago. See picture of this band in the booklet accompanying the FZ Mystery Disk.

Same scene looking north. A hot town; club was appropriately named.

Precise location of Club Sahara in San Bernardino.

The former Sportsman Tavern at 1055 E Holt Blvd in Pomona, CA:
"Dancing Fridays and Saturdays, Bowling, Shuffleboard" (1962 phone book).
Ray Collins walks in and hears Zappa playing in an R & B band. Ends up in
Studio Z recording "How's yer bird?" and later joins the Soul Giants playing
at the Broadside, just across the street from the Sportsman.

The former Broadside Bar on 960 East Holt Blvd in Pomona, CA.

The Soul Giants played here before FZ joined, subsequently becoming The Mothers
(Real Frank Zappa Book).

Back of The Broadside. FZ invites subsequent Freak Out-era manager Mark Cheka to drive
50 miles from LA to listen to The Mothers. The red door is recent. Building is full of wild cats
and stinks of piss (year 2000).

Inside The Broadside looking out through the entrance on Holt Blvd. Note club-era mirrors on columns.

"Ray Collins called me one night to replace another guitar player in the band he had been working with (The Soul Giants) since he'd gotten in a fight with him. They had a good gig at a club in Pomona called The Broadside. After the sax player, Davy Coronado, quit I took over, changed the band name, and eventually this recording was made".
(FZ note to "Mothers Live at The Broadside" in Mystery Disk booklet).
