Stokey the Bear

The third episode of "Dudley Do-Right of the Mounties" was aired only once in 1961, after which it was pulled, never to be broadcast again. The episode satirizes Smokey the Bear, and the U.S. Forestry Service lodged a complaint with NBC. Smokey was considered in the public interest, and the government wasn't satirized anywhere near as much in 1961 as it is now.

The episode concerns Stokey the Bear, a 700-pound cinnamon-colored bear wearing a mountie hat. Stokey formerly put out fires, but now he has been hypnotized by Snidely Whiplash and is starting fires instead.

Snidely Whiplash and Inspector Fenwick have only bit parts in "Stokey the Bear", and Nell Fenwick does not appear at all. Hans Conried plays Red Wood, Canada's wealthiest woodman. Bill Scott plays the fire chief.

Clips from "Stokey the Bear" can be seen in the opening montage of the syndicated Dudley Do-Right Show.
